John Bernhard
John Bernhard is a Swiss-American artist, photographer, designer, and writer who traveled extensively before settling in Houston in 1980. For more than three decades he has worked primarily in photography, exploring the everyday world from unexpected perspectives and extending the medium through collage and mixed media. His work frequently engages surrealist strategies, using visual juxtaposition and transformation to reveal unexpected relationships between images, perception, memory, and the subconscious. Bernhard’s first solo exhibition took place at the Houston Center for Photography in 1985. Since then he has presented more than thirty solo exhibitions, participated in museum exhibitions, and exhibited internationally His works are included in the permanent collections of more than twenty museums.
